HOW WE WORK
“High standards are paramount to our success.”
Rosewarne Cable Loggers are committed to the highest possible standards of health, safety and environmental management along with providing a wide range of harvesting equipment for hire.
We work with our crews to develop training plans for new workers as well as up-skilling existing workers who wish to further their knowledge and practical experience.
We have the skills, ability and equipment to be the one stop shop for your forest from start to finish.
Health and safety management
Rosewarne Cable Loggers are committed to having the highest possible standards to achieve the elimination of all accidents by providing the correct training in all aspects of logging. We have in place a health and safety management plan that promotes safety awareness, and institutes a work behavior resulting in a safe working environment.
We changed our health and safety provider in 2012 and have worked with SafeT Works to come up with a comprehensive health and safety management plan that is user friendly so everyone can receive the benefits. Three years ago we moved the system to an electronic version. This has seen more accurate reporting and in a faster timeframe. This allows us to act and follow up on incidents as they happen.
Safe-T Works visit each crew every six months to carry out a bi-annual systems audits. All staff are actively involved in these audits where they are invited to share their opinions and participate in their health and Safety program.
Monthly performance checks are carried out by Kerry and Karl to ensure that all daily and monthly procedures are being completed. For example, Safe behavioral observations, daily tool box meetings, machine checks, safety alerts and emails sent by management are being read and discussed with all crews. “Safety comes from awareness”.
Reading and learning from other peoples mishaps is paramount in our industry.
Rosewarne Cable Loggers believe the active participation of employees using the system has changed the attitude towards health and safety in the workplace. We see more incidents reported in and getting discussed in toolbox meetings for others to gain the benefit. The number and severity of injuries has been significantly reduced.
Drug Testing
We have always had a goal to eliminate drugs in the workforce and have actively tested since 1997. We were one of the key drivers establish a random testing program between the five main forest companies in Northland to achieve the same “standard” between all. We believe this was a major turning point and the positive effect this has had on the industry.
Our industry leading approach to training
Karl Bowman started with Colin Rosewarne when he was 17 years old. He has learnt every role working with haulers from the ground up. From the start, Karl always had a great interest in how to do it properly. It was this attitude that led him on to becoming a trainer for the industry. After a few years of training forestry in Malaysia, Karl decided to head back home and became our in-house trainer.
Karl specialises in the two most difficult areas of logging, manual tree falling and manual breaking out. He has a fantastic ability to relate to our new trainees, and he absolutely will not wavier if he believes a person is not yet at the right level. It is these attributes that we know we can rely on every time. Karl is also an accredited Competence Assessor.
Karl attends quarterly meetings in Wellington for the forest industry safety council as a representative for the workforce in forestry, and works closely with our health & safety manager and our external partners such as Worksafe NZ and our forest owners. Karl has won multiple awards and we have become industry leading in our training and compliance approach.
Environmental Management
Rosewarne Cable Loggers are committed to operating in an environmentally acceptable manner so we have minimum impact on the environment with our harvesting operations, and create a favorable impression with forest owners, the public, governing authorities and our own employees.
All crews currently work under the New Zealand Engineering TP223 standards and the Northern Regional Council’s, Forestry, Earthworks and Harvesting Guidelines.
We are audited under the governance of Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), and were one of the primary companies involved in the introduction of the FSC with Rayonier and Hancock Forest Management passing audits to a very high standard.
There is a continuing awareness amongst all staff for the need to operate in an environmentally acceptable manner at all times. All employees are required to hold NZQA Unit Standard 17772 (Demonstrate knowledge of environmental requirements in forestry operations) and each crew is required to have a minimum of one person who holds NZQA Unit Standard 6964 (Environmental Management to Harvesting Trees).
We use modern equipment that is well maintained and suitable for the designated purpose. We also utilise logging techniques and methods specifically aimed at minimising soil disturbance and adverse effects on the environment. We firmly believe the key to success in this area is having the ability to move crew configurations that best match the terrain.
Plant and machinery
Rosewarne Cable Loggers is capable of providing a very flexible service due to the range of harvesting equipment we have under our control, and the number of skilled staff to call upon.
The most efficient long term costs will be achieved by different options of equipment specifically set up for different areas of wood to be cleared.
